Uses of Adverbs of Place in English Grammar

What is Adverbs of Place?

"The word expresses place is called 'adverb of place' it is used to explain where an action happens."

It is associated with the action of the verb in a sentence, providing context for direction, distance, position and movement in a perticular direction.

An adverb of place, sometimes called spatial adverbs. These terms don’t usually end in -ly. (The test question is Where?).

» The test question 'Where?' : My school is nearby.

• Adverbs of place provides context for direction, distance, position and movement associated with the action of the verb in a sentence.:

1. Adverbs of place context for Directions,

2. Adverbs of place context for Distance.

3. Adverbs of place context for Position.

4. Adverbs of place for indicating Movement.

» Adverbs of place context for Directions :

Examples:
  • Here you are!
  • Here comes the sun.
  • There is love in the air.
  • • He ran upstairs to the bedroom.

Many times, adverbs of place can be used as prepositions as well. The difference is, when the phrase is used as an adverb, it is modifying a verb; when it is used as a preposition, it is always followed by a noun.

Examples:
  • • Chennai is located soutn of India.
  • • They travelled down river.
  • • That puppy was walking around by itself.

» Adverbs of place context for Distance :

Examples:
  • • Raj is moving far away.
  • • Pooja is sitting close to me.
  • • Shopping Mall is nearby our house.

» Adverbs of place context for Position :

Examples:
  • • The cat is sleeping on the bed.
  • • The treasure lies underneath the box.
  • • Why are you standing in the back of the dancefloor?

» Adverbs of place for indicating Movement :

Some adverbs of position will refer to a direction of movement. These often end in -ward or -wards.

Examples:
  • • Raj moved forward to answer.
  • • Oscar travelled onward to Los Angeles.
  • • Hannah looked upwards to the heavens.
  • • Riya, move forward to the front of the queue, please
Adverbs of Place are:
here, there, every where, nowhere, up, within, out, in, backward, away, down, left, close by, back, inside, far & near, near, nearby, inside, outside, upstairs, around, under the tree, on the desk, by me, onward, upward, forward, below, behind, southeast etc.
Uses of Adverb of place (Examples):
  • • Let's go there.
  • • The doctor is in.
  • • Come and sit by me.
  • • The balloon went up.
  • • Come and meet me here.
  • • We were waiting inside.
  • • The bedroom is upstairs.
  • • I could find him nowhere.
  • • I am going back to school.
  • • Our friends live close by.
  • • He kicked the ball around.
  • • My uncle’s house is nearby.
  • • She took the child outside.
  • • We find Indians everywhere.
  • • Diwali is still months away.
  • • I can't hear you. Come near.
  • • Hurry! You are getting behind.
  • • Maya looked upwards to the sky.
  • • He put all his books on the desk.
  • • Turn left at the end of the street.
  • • The plane caught fire and came down.
  • • Don't go in. There is someone inside.
  • • There is not enough money in my purse.
  • • The tired men rested under the tree.
  • • You should always go forward in life.
  • • Oscar travelled onward to Los Angeles.
  • • There was a big clock below the painting.
  • • They moved to the southeast of Australia.
  • • The parents searched far and near for their child.
  • • The school is within walking distance of my house.
  • • Why is this class making noise? The teacher has gone out.
  • • Tina dropped the ball, and it rolled backward / down the hill.
