Uses of Adverbs of Frequency in English

What is Adverbs of Frequency?

"The word which expresses frequency or how often something occurs is called 'adverb of frequency'."

Adverbs of frequency are always placed before noun.. (The test question is How often?).

» The test question 'How often?' : I come here frequently.

• There are two types of Adverbs of frequency:

1. Adverbs of definite frequency,

2. Adverbs of indefinite frequency.

» Adverbs of definite frequency : Usually placed at the end of the sentence.

Adverbs of definite frequency, are terms that labels definite frequency or express any exact number of times that happen in a given time period. Adverbs of definite frequency usually placed at the end of the sentence.

Examples:
  • • We get paid hourly.
  • • I come here frequently.
  • • The newspaper is bought daily.
  • • The situation seems to change monthly.

» Adverbs of indefinite frequency : Usually placed after the main verb or between the auxiliary verb and infinitive.

Adverbs of indefinite frequency, are terms that have an unclear meaning as to how long are how often something occurs. These adverbs usually placed after the main verb or between the auxiliary verb and infinitive.

Examples:
  • • We might not ever have met.
  • • Alisha is always late for prayer.
  • • I usually get up late on weekends.
  • • You can definitely never predict what will happen.
Adverbs of Frequency are:
twice, often, once, seldom, again, frequently, hourly, daily, always, never, sometimes, everyday, now & then, again & again, rarely, three times / twice a day, every week, usually, ever, normally, regularly, etc.
Uses of Adverb of frequency (Examples):
  • • We get paid hourly.
  • • I have seen her only once.
  • • I go there quite regularly.
  • • It is never too old to learn.
  • • I can normally make the shot.
  • • The newspaper is bought daily.
  • • Our teacher is always punctual.
  • • You can feed them twice a day.
  • • Do you go to see plays everyday?
  • • It was raining harder than ever.
  • • The spider tried again and again.
  • • He often goes outside the country.
  • • She goes to the movies every week.
  • • Rahul is seldom late for the class.
  • • He usually complete the work on time.
  • • The committee will meet twice a month.
  • • She rarely ask questions about sports.
  • • They practise sports three times a week.
  • • No, I don’t visit my in-laws now and then.
  • • The doctor visits this village only sometimes.
  • • After the quarrel, she has never talked to me again.
  • • Do you frequently go to theatre? No, we go only occasionally.
