WH Questions What Who When Whom Where Why Whose Which How
USES OF WH QUESTIONS (WH Question Words)
“Judge a person by his question(s), Rather than by his answer(s).”

The most common way to ask (for) information is to question. Two commonly used methods are –

(1) By using WH Questions or WH question words like: What, Who, When, Whom, Where, Why, Whose, Which, How etc. and

(2) By using auxiliary verbs like: Do, Be, Have, Can, May etc.

We use WH Question to seek information about Place, Time, Manner, Object, Choice, Reason, Distance, Duration, Number, Quantity, Frequency and Person.

  Information about   WH Question with
Place - Where
Time - When
    - What
Manner - How
Doer / Object - Who
Choice - Which
Reason - Why
Distance / Duration / Number / Quantity / Frequency - How
Person - Whose
    - Whom

With WH Questions we ask direct questions. eg. Why are you late? whereas with auxiliary verbs we ask indirect questions. eg. Can you tell me, why are you late?
